CCFS Conference Grant Awardee Scoops Young Scholar Award at PECERA2024-Tokyo

Ms. Zeng Xinying, EdUHK PhD student and awardee of the Centre’s Simon K.Y. Lee Foundation Early Childhood Education Award for Overseas Conference, received the Young Scholar Award at the annual conference of the Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association (PECERA), 2-4 August 2024 at Tokyo. This prestigious award acknowledges outstanding research by postgraduate students and early career scholars in the field of early childhood education.

Zeng’s paper was titled “Family Socioeconomic Status Predicts Child Executive Functions: Child Routines as a Mediator”. It explores how child routines mediate the link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and executive functions (EFs). Her research contributes to the design and implementation of targeted interventions that can effectively support EFs development in children from low SES families.

Zeng shared her winning words in ecstasy, “The PECERA Annual Conference 2024 was a wonderful experience. I was delighted to present two talks, which allowed me to share and discuss our latest findings with experts in early childhood education. I received invaluable feedback on my research and learned from many insightful studies. I am deeply honored to receive the Young Scholar Award, which serves as both recognition and encouragement. My sincere gratitude goes to my supervisor, Dr. Eva Lau, my team, and the Simon K.Y. Lee Foundation, as well as the Centre for Child and Family Science (CCFS) at The Education University of Hong Kong for their support in enabling my attendance at this conference.”

This conference trip received financial support from the Simon K.Y. Lee Foundation Early Childhood Education Award for Overseas Conference. The Award aims at building and strengthening the research capacity of EdUHK students in the field of early childhood education. It supports doctoral students to present their research findings at overseas conferences, at a maximum amount of HK$10,000 for each awardee.

Congratulations to Zeng on her remarkable achievement. We wish her all the best with her study and future endeavors!

2024 PECERA conference

Professor Kevin Chung, CCFS Director and Principal Investigator of the 3Es project, was invited to present at the annual conference of the Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association (PECERA), 2-4 August 2024. His presentation topic is “Supporting children and families with diverse needs: What do we know and what can we do?”

Abstract: It is vital to embrace diversity and promote inclusion—especially in the early years—as a means to create a positive environment that supports all children and all families, regardless of their sociocultural backgrounds and existing levels of competency. The million-dollar question, however, is how one may use theory and research to inform school activities and parenting practices. In this symposium, Kevin will first discuss the larger roles of cultural and psychological factors in understanding individual differences among young children with diverse needs. Kevin will then focus on multifaceted processes that may shape children’s learning and development in school and at home. Kevin will eventually provide examples of how researchers and practitioners may target school and family processes to catalyse systemic changes. These changes may engage teachers and parents in collaborative efforts to help children deal with challenges and maximise their potential.

Stella

Center on the Developing Child

Awareness:首先我們將焦點放在個人對壓力的察覺上,雖然壓力人人有,但未必所有人、尤其是學童會明白察覺壓力所帶來的不同徵狀或身體反應;

Breathing:明白如何察覺和辨識壓力的徵狀後,第二集的焦點在如何引導學童在壓力下平靜自己,影片中觀眾會學習到透過呼吸方法,調節自己的心跳和其他身體反應,好讓自己感到壓力即時的舒緩;

Cognition changes:當身體的壓力感受得到即時的舒緩後,要長遠而有效地調節對壓力的感覺,我們在第三及第四集為學童介紹不同的思想方法或陷阱,以及如何透過調節想法來處理壓力感覺;

Daily habits:

It’s not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.”,希望本系到的短片和練習,能夠協助學童對更有效地回應壓力,精神狀態更健康!

The 3Es project seeks to develop an evidence-based, tiered intervention curriculum that promotes the socioemotional competence of kindergarten children in Hong Kong. Expanding on both local and international research, the project has developed an assessment tool that evaluates children’s socioemotional competence and a series of teaching and training materials that enhances children’s social and emotional skills and, consequentially, school readiness and academic abilities. The project has achieved many good outcomes making a real difference in the field of early childhood education.
